According to ChaCha Entertainment, 1/4th of American adults aged 18 to 30 has a tattoo, and women constitute 45 percent and 65 percent of the tattoo market. It's difficult to accurately assess the percentage of Americans that are inked and even more so to then determine how many women bare tats. But you don't need research to know that the percentage of women getting inked up is growing. And more men are figuring out what I have known all along: Ink matters in a relationship.
You don't really know anything about a woman at first glance. She could be anyone or capable of anything. My absolute worst experience in a relationship was with a beauty pageant girl who had trophies dating back from early childhood. She was a stunner and quite possibly bi-polar. After this relationship and a restraining order, I needed a change. It wasn't long before a mutual friend set me up with a bartender at our favorite refreshment spot. Across her back displayed a sultry naked angel wrapped with a coiled python. In the Angel's right hand was a revolver and in the left was a realistic human heart.
Her name was Wendy and she let us know she would be off work at 2 am. We met her for a predawn breakfast and I was captivated. She was smart, witty and didn't go on endlessly about herself. She wanted to know about me and my interests. I was taken by surprised by how easily it was to talk to her on an even level. I felt no pressure to impress and I opened up to her like I had known her all my life. I asked her finally about her tattoo and if it has significance. She promptly informed me that makeup is insignificant but ink is forever. When you put it on, you had better live up to it. Wendy is an angel bound by the deceitful world and within her lies the power of love and death.
Chawnee and I have been friends long before we discovered the opposite sex. We climbed trees and rode bikes and fished together. She was my very first kiss and I she gave my first black eye for telling everyone. I named my cat after her, a fact which she despises. But my reasoning was that my cat resembles her tattoo. On her thigh, Chawnee bares a tattoo of a large Siamese cat baring an Egyptian bejeweled collar. Within the jewel are the stars of that make up the constellation Orion. The cat's eyes match Chawnee's large beautiful blue eyes. She is a graceful, loving and faithful lifelong friend. She carries herself like royalty and is an avid hunter.
I have met many women with ink in my time and each special in her own way. As Wendy said it so eloquently, ink truly is forever and what you brand into your skin becomes a part of you. You have to really know yourself to find the one that tells the story of who you really are. Some people's stories are so epic they have to have many tattoos. Some tats are so special they can say it all with just one. In my own experience, I've yet to be let down by a woman baring ink and I can't say the same for girls without.
The last and probably most significant inked woman in my life is my mother. On her left shoulder over her heart is a half broken heart tied together with a blue ribbon. Written on the ribbon is my birth date.
