Another's Self Respect is Not Your Opinion
Self Respect: self-re·spect (s lf r -sp kt ). n. Due respect for oneself, one's character, and one's conduct. self -re·spect ing adj. self-respect. n. a proper sense of one's own dignity.
This was perhaps my preferred definition of the term. The exact wording of the term varies somewhat depending upon the publication but in each, the emphasis is upon a view of one's personal assessment of one's own character and conduct. We take for granted, when we say someone has no self respect, that we have no discernible way of knowing how they value their character or conduct.
The person in the image is Chevy Leigh, an artist, entertainer, performer and friend. I can vouch for her integrity, honesty and her sincerity. She is respected by her family and her close friends that regard her character as that of a strong, dependable and loving human being. Chevy will be the first to come to your aid providing support and a good kick in the ass to get you out of your funk. However, she is often perceived by others at surface value.
I thought Chevy would be the perfect candidate to represent this article. Some of the negative posts she has received has ranged from insulting to outright lecherous. As an entertainer, Chevy has to expect some degree of hater responses. She puts herself out there as does any celebrity actor, singer or athlete. But can we assume we really know her?
I cannot attest, for Chevy, as to her view of her own character or her conduct. I wouldn't ask. I liken that a stranger on the street asking if I am a saved Christian. If I truly value my spirituality I would not discuss that with anyone except God. This is the reason why we need to take great care not simply in our judgement of others but our view of the world around us.
Do we take for granted that everyone has a right to express themselves how they wish? There are truly unique and beautiful people in the world that step outside their shells and display the vibrant colors of their souls for us all to see. What a bland and boring canvas our society would be without them. As an experiment, the next time we step outside into the world and happen across someone with tattoos, piercings, colored hair and Gothic attire, we should take a moment to meet eyes with that person and smile. You can see true happiness in someone. Will they see it in you?
What would our world be like without Chevy Leigh? Those that know her as a friend would admit to a world made slightly dimmer without those beautiful eyes and that contagious smile. For the rest of us, the loss of the rest of her would be tragic.
